Kidney problems – the Ayurvedic approach

Kidney remedies, cumin and corianderCan Ayurveda help treat kidney problems? If you are suffering from congestion, kidney stones, crystal urea or high pitta, an Ayurvedic approach can sometimes be the solution you are looking for. Among nature’s best healers, cumin and coriander are highly efficient when it comes to calm congestion and pain.

Coriander leaves contain phytonutrients and anti-oxidants while the seeds contain various essential oils that make this herb useful as antiseptic, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory remedy protecting kidneys from infections. Coriander is also a very good source of vitamins A, C, K having diuretic and detoxifying properties and will act as a natural cleaner of the kidney.

To flush the kidneys

Drink 200ml watermelon with half teaspoonful of coriander powder. This makes a great natural diuretic to keep kidneys clean.

High pitta, kidney stones or crystal urea can cause tightness and pain in the lower part of the back. To help this congestion try the traditional cumin – coriander tea. Boil in water equal amount of cumin and coriander and drink 2 or 3 times a day.  If you experience pain use a hot and cold compress (hot water bottle and ice bag).

To the kidney area apply alternatively a hot and cold compress every 30 seconds, until the pain subsides.

When it comes to cumin powder, it can be used in your kitchen while cooking added to the sautéed or roasted veggies, in guacamole, lentil soup or hummus – or in preparing warm beverages.

Cumin is used for renal colic – grind a mixture of 20g cumin, 12g caraway seeds (Carum carvi) and 6g black salt and take daily about 3g of this mixture along with a bit of vinegar and for renal cramps – use cumin seeds as they are beneficial for maintaining the strength of the kidney.

Lifestyle Changes

Yoga. Try yoga breathing and physical positions that “cool” the body. Eat cooling foods rather than heat provoking foods- eg salads and non-spicy foods.
