The ayurvedic treatment for arthritis

Arthritis is a vata disorder with characteristics such as dryness, cracking and lack of mobility. According to Ayurveda or ancient Indian most pains are due to an aggravation of vata (air) energy or dosha.
Arthritis is normally caused by accumulation of toxins or ama and aggravation of vata. (Ama is a toxic by-product of improper digestion). This ama circulates throughout the whole body and collects at sites which are generally weaker. Accumulation at joints with simultaneous aggravation of vata energy is the root cause of various form of arthritis. The causes of an imbalance in Vata Dosha or energy are factors such as eating dry, cold or stale food, irregular sleeping habits, suppression of natural urges, exposure to cold and dry weather. There can be degeneration or injury of the cartilages due to ageing or extra strain on the joints.
Vata imbalance causes ama to travel into the colon, and from there throughout the body. If it lodges in the joints this causes stiffness and pain that is classified as arthritis. In ayurveda we want to remove the ama or toxins from the joint and bring it back to the colon, and then to eliminate it. To do this, we need to keep the colon clean.
